Another breed of aquatic explorers are now discovering the wonders of Wakatobi’s reefs, the freedivers. Holding their breath, they emulate marine mammals as they delve below the surface; some reaching depths where few scuba divers would venture. One of the first of these breath-hold divers to visit Wakatobi was Ai Futaki, known to many as one of the world’s leading freediving masters. For Ai, the sport isn’t just about pushing personal limits and setting records, it is an exercise in relaxation and creating connections—both with the physical world and the human potential that lies within. Though she does have some breath-hold diving records to her credit, she doesn’t label herself a competitor, but instead describes herself as an “underwater harmonist.” She expresses and shares the beauty of the underwater world through imaging, modeling and underwater performance—all created while free diving…

透き通る紺碧の海の中をクジラの親子とともに泳ぎ、海の神秘に迫っていきます。

In 2011, Ai Futaki became the first human to earn two Guinness World Records for the longest distance dive in a cave with one single breath [with fins and without fins]. She studied film, documentaries, and Spanish in California and Cuba, started underwater life as a scuba-diver, and then finally met free-diving which dives underwater with One single breath. She is one and the only person in the world who shares the beauty of connecting with the nature by free-diving. She is the bridge between the water world and the human world as an underwater harmonist (underwater performance, modelling, and filming), and as a symbol of the water.

水中表現家の二木あいさんは、「洞窟で一番長い距離を一息で行く」ギネス世界記録の保持者です。身体と精神の調和した二木さんが水中を舞う姿で、健康のすばらしさ、挑戦する企業姿勢を表現しました。

継ぎなしで90メートル走ることを想像してみてください。つらそうだけれど、できそうな気がしますね。水中だったらどうでしょう。そんなことができるのは、魚か、人魚か、二木あいだけです。二木は2011年にメキシコの洞窟の中をフリーダイビング(素潜り)で最も長い距離を泳ぐ記録にフィン無しで挑戦し、世界初のギネス記録に登録されました。同じく100メートルの距離をフィン有りで泳ぐ記録にも挑戦し、こちらは女性初のギネス記録を打ち立てました。彼女は3歳のときから水の虜でした。カリフォルニアとキューバに渡り、映画やドキュメンタリーを撮影する技術とスペイン語を学んだ後、4年間、スキューバダイブのビデオグラファーや洞窟ダイビングのガイドとして世界中を巡り、ひと呼吸の空気だけで潜るフリーダイビング(素潜り)と出会いました。そして、フリーダイビング(素潜り)によるパフォーマンス、モデル、撮影を行う、世界でも数少ない水中アーティストの1人となり、海の素晴らしさを伝えるために活動しています。彼女のフィルムは、テレビやイベント、水族館の展覧会でも取り上げられ、彼女をモデルとした写真は、水中写真家アーロン・ウォンが撮影した写真集『WATER.COLOR』をはじめ、いくつもの雑誌や本ページを飾っています。
Imagine running ninety meters on a single breath. Daunting but conceivable, right? But . . . underwater? You’d have to be a fish, a mermaid or Ai Futaki, who earned a Guinness World Record for that singular feat in 2011 sans fins, by the way and a second for swimming a hundred meters in a cave on one inhalation. Ai’s love affair with water began when she was three. After journeying to California and Cuba to study film, documentaries and Spanish, she worked the world’s oceans for four years as a scuba-diving videographer and cave dive guide. Then she discovered apnea freediving on a lungful of air. Now, as one of very few humans specializing in freediving underwater performance arts, modeling and filming, Ai lives to convey the splendors of the sea to us. Her films are featured on TV and at events and aquarium expositions, and her image regularly graces the pages of magazines and books, including photographer Aaron Wong’s stunning WATER.COLORS and Blue Within.
